The Feast of the Blessed Trinity, otherwise known as the Feast of the Holy Trinity is celebrated in the towns of Talibon and Loay. The feast falls on the month of May yet the exact date cannot be stated for it is movable. The church hierarchy though set the feast on the Sunday after Pentecost. In Talibon, however, the curia set the date on the last Saturday of May, to facilitate the homecoming of the “Balikbayans”.

The love for the Blessed Trinity is deeply ingrained in the hearts of the Boholanos, who are deeply religious. This religiosity is expressed through feasts, both in the religious and social sphere, and is observed with much fanfare.

History and Significance of The Feast of the Blessed Trinity

The Feast of the Blessed Trinity holds a special place in the hearts of the Boholanos, as it is deeply rooted in their religious and cultural traditions. Tracing its origins, we delve into the rich history and significance of this revered feast.

The origins of the Feast of the Blessed Trinity can be traced back to the early centuries of Christianity. During the first thousand years, there was no specific feast dedicated to the Holy Trinity. However, every day of the liturgical year was devoted to honoring and adoring the Sacred Trinity, as declared by Pope Alexander II in 1073.

To counteract the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of the Son, a special Mass text in honor of the Holy Trinity was introduced. This Mass text, known as a votive Mass, could be used on certain Sundays according to the personal devotion of each priest. It wasn't until the ninth century that various bishops in the Frankish kingdoms began promoting a special feast of the Holy Trinity in their dioceses.

The feast gained popularity in the northern countries of Europe, and several synods prescribed its observance in their respective territories. In the thirteenth century, the Benedictines and Cistercians adopted the annual celebration of the feast. However, it was only in 1334, under the pontificate of Pope John XXII, that the Feast of the Holy Trinity was officially accepted into the calendar of the Western Church. The pope ordered that the feast be celebrated everywhere on the Sunday after Pentecost.

With the acceptance of the feast, a new Mass text was written and published. The Preface of the Trinity, which is still recited today, appeared in the first text of the Sacramentary of Saint Gregory the Great. Other prayers associated with the feast were developed over time. The Divine Office, in its present form, was arranged under Pope Saint Pius V in 1572 and became one of the most sublime offices of the breviary.

The Feast of the Blessed Trinity holds great theological significance for Christians. It is the celebration of the central mystery of the Christian faith—the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is the belief in one God who exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is a profound and transcendent truth that surpasses the natural power of human reasoning. The feast provides an opportunity for the faithful to reflect on this mystery and deepen their understanding of the nature of God.

The Feast of the Blessed Trinity also carries immense spiritual meaning for the Boholano community. The devotion to the Holy Trinity is deeply ingrained in their religious practices and beliefs. The feast serves as a reminder of their unwavering faith and commitment to the triune God. It is a time for prayer, contemplation, and renewal of their spiritual connection.
