Tubigon Church main facade

Tubigon Church has an intriguing history. It was not mentioned in a 1779 inventory of churches, suggesting a possible period of abandonment.

However, in 1819, it was formally established as a town, created from barrios of Calape and Inabanga.

The church became a parish under the Recollects in 1854, although the exact construction dates remain unclear.

The church's exterior reveals exposed mortar, showcasing sturdy posts or haligi that support the roof. These posts are embedded within the mortar, adding structural integrity to the building.

Tubigon Church follows a basilical plan with a central nave and aisles, but it also features a transept. The crossing of the church is covered by an octagonal cupola, adding a unique architectural element.

The church's fabric exhibits a combination of materials.

The upper part of the walls and facade are made of concrete, while the lower section consists of rubble held together by lime mortar.

Additionally, metal sheets were incorporated into the upper part of the nave. According to Jose (2001), these modern materials were likely added between 1928 and 1934 during the construction of the bell tower.

The nave of Tubigon Church features a remarkable metal ceiling adorned with intricate designs created by Ray Francia, a renowned artist from Cebu.

His signature can be found over the gospel or left transept, marking his contribution to the church's artistic beauty.

Alongside Canuto Avila, Francia was commissioned by the bishops of Cebu to paint the churches of Bohol during the 1920s and 30s.

Francia's paintings in Tubigon Church, like in other churches across Bohol, drew inspiration from holy pictures and illustrations found in catechisms and Bible histories.

His skillful interpretation of these religious themes brought vibrant and captivating visuals to the interior of the church, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere and providing a visual representation of faith for worshipers and visitors alike.
